Abortion rate down … so much for defunding Planned Parenthood

If you were to listen to Rush Limbaugh and right-wing radio or right-wing television, you would think that women are running around aborting grown children. Indeed, the GOPs religiously inspired relentless war on women and their bizarre and invasive attempts to control the female anatomy (apparently they want government small enough to fit into a uterus) has made “Not in my Front Yard” a major voting issue among women. Despite the fact that Rush Limbaugh and all of his right-wing media toadies were slandering women as sluts for practicing responsible sex and getting contraception covered under Obamacare (Viagra has been covered under insurance for years), the abortion rate just hit an all time low. Of course facts are for terrorists, and right-wing republicans will simply find a new way to spread fear and smear.

According to the Center for Disease Control, data shows that the United States abortion rate is at an all time low. It reportedly dropped 5 percent between 2008 and 2009, the most recent years for which data is available, the largest decline in the past decade, Indeed, abortions are so 2008.

Why the sudden drop in abortions you might ask? Well, the answer may surprise you as it seems economics and the poor economy have little to do with it. It’s actually the availability of contraceptives.

Academic research showed that the economy actually had a relatively small impact on the abortion rate. For example, A 2004 paper in the journal Health Economics looked at the relationship between the economy and abortion rates at the state level and concluded the following:

“As the economy moves into recession, a 1-point rise in the unemployment rate leads to about a 3 percent increase in abortion rates.” (Source: WaPo)

A similar study looked at the various contraceptives women are using and found that they are what are factoring into the declining rate. For example, the study  looked at the usage of long-acting, reversal contraceptives, methods like interuterine devices, which tend to have much higher efficacy rates than birth control pills, and found that to be the reason.

Sorry GOP, you’ll have to go revert to your throwback platform of hating gays.
