Advertorial: What exactly is Botox … and what can it do for you?

BY WAYNE HEMRICK

Botox_optSince Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002, doctors across the U.S have performed an astounding 13 million procedures using this one-of-a-kind anti-wrinkle treatment. It continues to gain popularity as a temporary way to erase facial lines and wrinkles, and effectively 'roll back the clock.' Here are some of the benefits of Botox as an anti-aging treatment for both men and women:

It's a Non-Surgical and Minimally Invasive Solution

Botox is an injectable that works by relaxing the facial muscles that cause wrinkles, so it doesn't carry any of the risks associated with cosmetic surgeries such as facelifts and browlifts. This also means that the long and painful recovery period that can accompany an invasive surgical procedure is totally eliminated.

It's an Anti-Aging Treatment With Few Side Effects

Because Botox treatments only involve the application of a topical anesthetic followed by a series of tiny injections, there's virtually no discomfort or down time. Plus, the average treatment takes only 30 minutes. This lets patients get right back to their busy lives without dealing with sutures, staples and scarring.

Any associated side effects are mostly temporary, and may include swelling, bruising, tenderness and/or redness around the injection sites.

It's a Fast and Temporary Treatment

Patients will usually see the positive effects of a Botox treatment within three to five days, and improvement in the treated area can continue for up to 30 days. The results of a Botox procedure only last for three to five months, and the effects will just fade away on their own if the desired outcome hasn't been achieved.

It's a Safe and Effective Wrinkle Fighter

Botox injections have proven very effective at reducing forehead wrinkles, deep lines around the mouth, 'crowsfeet' around the eyes, and 'frown lines' in the brow area. Even though it's derived from the botulinus toxin, no deaths have been associated with Botox treatments. Because Botox injections are most often administered by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and other experienced health care professionals, the potential risks are minimized.

It's an Affordable Anti-Aging Alternative

In comparison to the cost of a cosmetic surgery, such as a facelift, Botox is relatively inexpensive, even though repeat treatments are necessary on average three times a year to maintain results. It's also cost-comparable to the variety of cosmetic dermal fillers that are currently available.

It Offers Relief for Hyperhidrosis Sufferers

Botox is also a proven treatment for hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating. By effectively blocking the chemical signals to the sweat glands, it offers up to four months of relief to those suffering from these often embarrassing conditions.

Is Botox the Right Choice?

Any potential cosmetic procedure should be discussed first with a dermatologist or physician. A doctor's guidance will take an individual's needs, skin condition and circumstances into consideration. Botox, like any other dermatological procedure, has its pros and cons, but many individuals have enjoyed marked improvement in their self image after receiving treatment. Ultimately, choosing a cosmetic procedure should involve learning all the facts and then making an informed decision

Botox side effects do NOT just including 'bruising and swelling'. The serious side effects that doctors choose to disclose from us, but are clearly listed on the Botox website include:

- Problems swallowing, speaking, or breathing, due to weakening of associated muscles, can be severe and result in loss of life.
-Spread of toxin effects
- Loss of strength and all-over muscle weakness
- Double vision
- Blurred vision and drooping eyelids
- Change or loss of voice (dysphonia)
- Loss of bladder control

Yes, be sure to seek out a licensed cosmetic surgeon for Botox or other injectables. Botox is a drug, the person injecting it should be trained and licensed to do so.

I agree with the last paragraph--that any medical procedure, no matter how big or small it is--should be consulted first with a physician. Even though Botox seems harmless, it is still a cosmetic plastic surgery procedure and it poses risks and complications. I think that Botox is not "friendly" to every type of skin that it why, every patient should check first with a surgeon or a dermatologist.
