Atlantic City casino revenue remains low as gamblers stay home or go elsewhere

trump091009_optAtlantic City's 11 casinos reported $391.7 million in casino win in August, the peak of the tourist season, a 16.3 percent

decrease over the same month a year ago.

Results reported to the New Jersey Casino Control Commission Thursday show that the casinos won $276.1 million at the slot machines and another $115.6 million at table games in August. Slot revenue fell 14.6 percent while table game revenues decreased by 20.3 percent.

After adjustments and a deduction for promotional gaming credits, casinos paid $28.5 million on taxable gross revenue of $356.5 million in August. That money, 8 percent of taxable gross revenue, goes into the state Casino Revenue Fund which pays for programs that benefit senior citizens and the disabled.

In addition, the casinos incurred another $4.9 million in reinvestment obligations. They are required to reinvest 1.25 percent of gross revenue in projects approved by the state Casino Reinvestment Development Authority.

For the first eight months of the year, casinos won $2.71 billion, down 15.1 percent from the same period in 2008. Revenue from slot machines is down 15.2 percent and revenue from table games is down 14.9 percent for the eight months. Taxable gross revenue fell 19.3 percent to $2.58 billion.

Win, or casino revenue, is the net amount of money won by casinos. It is not profit.

Detailed data on revenues from each individual casino can be found at the commission's web site http://www.njccc.gov/casinos/financia/mthrev/
