With Black Friday shoppers out in full force, some N.J. politicians want to remind buyers to occupy stores from their local community.

Assemblyman Wayne D’Angelo wants to see shoppers support their local businesses, telling the Republic that the support can help smaller stores stay in business in this tough economy.

Customers are more likely to take advantage of extreme sales offered by major retailers with big advertising budgets, but D’Angelo points out that local shops often have quality goods at affordable prices.

In South Jersey, the Salem County Chamber of Commerce is carrying the same message. Executive Director Jennifer Jones said to NJ.com, “Local businesses employ county residents and they support all kinds of initiatives whether it’s volunteering for non-profits, food drives, or sponsoring local little league and football teams.”

Costello’s Christmas and Home Shoppe in Deepwater. Salem County, has been in business for 64 years. Owner Connie Costello said, “Our customers came here when they were children and now they are bringing their children and grandchildren.”

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer spoke to a crowd in front of Big Fun Toys in Hoboken, which has been open since 1953. Zimmer said, according to NJ.com, "They are the backbone of our economy. They make this city unique and vibrant."

According to Toms River Patch, the Jersey Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau has been encouraging residents and Jersey Shore visitors to the Jersey Shore to shop locally year round.

The Small Business Administration estimates that about 780,000 small businesses operate in New Jersey.
