Is Mars candy's Snickers shrinking and calorie cutting really 'fun' sized?

Mars makes seven of the top-selling brands of chocolate in the world, and they’ve agreed to help the American people "just say no." Get ready for more fun sized candy.

In an effort to help fight the obesity epidemic across the country, a spokesperson for Mars Inc. said the company will stop shipping chocolate bars that exceeded 250 calories per portion by the end of 2013.

NPR reports that a regular 2 ounce Snickers bar has 280 calories with 14 grams of fat, and will drop about 11 percent of its size. Their bars currently range from 70 to 540 calories. Mars also produces Skittles, Twix, M&Ms, and Juicy Fruit gum.

According to Reuters, the biggest victim of the candy downsizing campaign will be the 540-calorie king-size Snickers bar, which will be gone by 2014. The Vancouver Sun reports that the packaging will change on some of the Mars bars. The remains of the King Size portions will be further subdivided into smaller "2toGo" sub-portions. The concept there would be for the candy buyer to put a serving aside to eat later. Good luck with that.

RTT News reports that 16 companies have agreed to cut more than 1.5 trillion calories from their products and cut portion sizes by 2016, among them Mars, Hershey, Nestle, Kellogg, and Pepsi.

Mars is also looking to cut the sodium levels of its products by 25 percent by the end of 2014. The company claims it has already removed 97 percent of the trans fats from its chocolate candies.

Their website says that Mars is gearing part of their “responsible snacking” campaign to obesity among children. The company says they will not purchase advertising time or space if more than a quarter of the target audience is under 12, and they won’t advertise on websites geared to the under 12 age group.

The nutrition information and what’s inside a Mars bar is available at Mars Healthy Living.
