Merwick Care & Rehabilitation Center in collaboration with Princeton Home Care Services will host an informational luncheon on Dec. 7 in Plainsboro to tell seniors how they can best prepare for and stay safe this winter.
A panel of professionals in geriatric care including Merwick Medical Director Dr. Harpreet Sidhu will lead the discussion. “Survival kits” provided by Princeton Homecare Services will also be handed out.
Sidhu, who has worked in geriatric healthcare for 10 years, will focus on simple tips for seniors to stay healthy and safe while living at home during the winter.
“I want seniors to realize that with cold weather and snow comes an increased risk of illness and injury and that it isn’t difficult to prepare and take care of themselves,” Sidhu said Friday. She encourages that seniors get flu shots and understand their limits when it comes to going outdoors. “Don’t be too heroic. If it’s slippery or there is a lot of snow outside, stay inside until the conditions are better.”
The survival kits contain essential needs such as water, food, flashlights and first aid materials in case of a weather emergency that prevents people from leaving their homes.
Merwick is the newest addition to the Windsor Healthcare family of communities which consists of 10 care and rehabilitation facilities throughout N.J. A family-owned company, Windsor Healthcare attempts to help patients and residents maintain their quality of life.
