umdnj052709_optPatients treated at UMDNJ-University Hospital in Newark for conditions related to cardiology, orthopedics and urology receive some of the best care in the nation as measured by the likelihood that they will survive their illnesses, according to new rankings made public Tuesday.

The data, from the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), place the hospital among the top 10 academic medical centers in the nation in each of these areas.

UHC is an association of 106 academic medical centers in the United States and assists hospitals with enhancing their quality improvement methods.

"We are proud to have several of our clinical programs ranked among the top 10 academic medical centers in the United States," said Dr. Vincent Barba, medical director for Quality Improvement at UMDNJ-University Hospital and UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School (UMDNJ-NJMS). "It exemplifies our commitment to obtaining the best possible outcomes for our patients."

According to the ratings, UMDNJ-University Hospital outperformed other academic medical centers by demonstrating superior rates when ranked among similar hospitals.

Specifically, the hospital's cardiology survival rates – expected compared to actual – ranked number two for the period July 2008 to June. The achievement was led by Dr. Marc Klapholz, chief of cardiology.

UMDNJ-University Hospital's orthopedics program, which specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and management of disease and injuries of the musculoskeletal system, was ranked fifth in terms of actual survival outcomes. The program is headed by Dr. Joseph Benevenia, chief of orthopedics.

In addition, the urology program at UMDNJ-University Hospital garnered the hospital a sixth place ranking when compared to the nation's more than 100 academic medical centers' urology programs. Dr. Mark L. Jordan, chief of urology, and Prof. Harris L. Willits, chief of the, Division of Urology led the achievement.

"These are achievements that we are certainly proud of," Barba said. "We are committed to providing the best care for our patients at UMDNJ-University Hospital."

Agree. UMDNJ full of crooks
Cardiologists indicted for kickbacks, Urology residency unfilled in 2009 match, Massive exodus of physicians from Ortho residency program.

Whatever the rankings, they are definitely skewed. Newark, one of the top 10 academic medical centers. Who are you kidding?
