Ralph Nader to speak on health care reform at FDU

Consumer activist and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader will speak about health care reform when he makes two appearances at Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison next week.

Nader will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dreyfuss Theater and at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday at Hennessey Hall. The theater and hall are on the campus at 285 Madison Ave.

Nader, was named one of the "100 Most Influential Americans of the 20th Century" by Time magazine, is a founder of Single Payer Action, an activist group that is promoting comprehensive health insurance for Americans. Nader charges that single-payer health insurance, in which the government pays for care that is delivered by the private sector, would save money and lives, but that Democrats who have supported it in the past are now balking.

Nader will be speaking at the 2009 Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference sponsored by FDU's Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies. Nader helped start the Center for Auto Safety, Public Citizen and student Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) that operate in more than 20 states.

Other speakers at the conference include Dick Sweeney, co-founder of Keurig, maker of the leading single-cup brewing system in North America. After helping start the company in 1993, Sweeney joined it full-time as vice president of engineering in 1996 and now is vice president of contract manufacturing and quality assurance.

Darian Rodriguez Heyman, former executive director of the Craigslist Foundation, an organization dedicated to fostering community engagement will also speak. At Craigslist, he helped launch Non-profit Boot Camp, a one-day conference that quickly grew into the largest non-profit gathering in San Francisco Bay area.
