Smucker’s is recalling 3,000 16-ounce jars of its natural chunky peanut butter because of possible contamination with salmonella.
According to an Associated Press report on NorthJersey.com, the jars would have been purchased between November 8 and Thursday, and they contain "Best if Used By" dates of Aug. 3, 2012 and Aug. 4, 2012, along with UPC code 5150001701, and production codes of 1307004 and 1308004.
Webmd.com reports that the recall is only for Smucker’s chunky style peanut butter, and no illnesses have been reported. The company began the recall voluntarily due to a routine sampling program that showed some finished products may contain the bacteria.
The jars were sold in: Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
Business Insider reports that symptoms of salmonella could include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps starting 12 to 72 hours after initially contracting the illness.
The elderly, infants, and individuals with weaker immune systems are more likely to contract salmonella. The illness usually lasts four to seven days in duration, and most people recover fully without requiring treatment. But Reuters reported that salmonella can cause death if it reaches the blood stream.
