Cited for orthopedics care and other 'high performing' specialties
UMDNJ-The University Hospital in Newark has been ranked number 14 overall in the New York metropolitan area, as well as number 40 nationally in orthopedics, in U.S. News & World Report’s 2011-12 Best Hospitals rankings.
The rankings showcase 720 hospitals out of about 5,000 hospitals nationwide. Each is ranked among the country’s top hospitals in at least one medical specialty or ranked among the best hospitals in its metro area.
UMDNJ-The University Hospital’s high New York metro ranking places it on the magazine’s list of the “Best Hospitals” in the region, which encompasses New York City, Long Island and Westchester County in New York, and northern New Jersey.
In addition to the numerical rankings, the magazine also honored six of the hospital’s specialties as “high performing.” They are Cancer; Ear, Nose and Throat; Gynecology; Nephrology; Pulmonology and Urology.
“We are proud of the work that our orthopedic faculty and staff do every day on behalf of this hospital’s patients,” Dr. Joseph Benevenia, professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology for the hospital and at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. “We feel honored as a department to be nationally ranked, and to be part of a hospital that is considered one of the “Best” in the entire New York region.”
The Best Hospitals’ listing is designed to help guide patients who need an especially high level of care because of a difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age.“These are referral centers where other hospitals send their sickest patients,” Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings editor, said. “Hospitals like these are ones you or those close to you should consider when the stakes are high.
“These are hospitals we call ‘high performers,’’’ Comarow said. “They are fully capable of giving most patients first-rate care, even if they have serious conditions or need demanding procedures. Almost every major metro area has at least one of these hospitals.”
