New Year’s means diet time for a lot of people, and considering all of the options available, it helps if a diet has easy-to-follow instructions. The second annual list of U. S. News and World Report’s best diets also contains a ranking of the easiest diets to follow.

The magazine used 22 national experts in diet, nutrition, obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in compiling their rankings. The experts added their own findings in weight loss, nutrition, safety, and diabetes and heart disease management.

The top five easiest diets to follow according to U.S. News and World Report were: 1.) Weight Watchers Diet, 2.) Jenny Craig, 3.) Mediterranean, and tied for fourth were Slim-Fast and Volumetrics.

Weight Watchers is based on a daily allotment of points, Jenny Craig’s meals are pre-packaged and home delivered to make things easier, and the Mediterranean diet is more diverse, and suited to a dieter’s preferred selections. Slim-Fast uses meal replacements, and Volumetrics emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and soup.

The New York Daily News reported that the DASH diet came in first as the “Best Diet Overall” in fighting weight loss, hypertension, and lowering cholesterol. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diet is endorsed by the National Institutes of Health because it helps dieters control diabetes and prevents heart disease. According to naturalstandard.com, a recent study suggests that women who maintain the habit of eating fruits and vegetables like the DASH diet may reduce their risk of breast cancer.

The Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) Diet, created by the NIH, tries to lower cholesterol, and came in as second best. Third was the Mayo Clinic diet, used for weight loss. According to MSNBC, the TLC diet may be tougher to follow because U.S. News and World Report says it takes work, and dieters need to read nutrition labels.

Top three weight loss diets in the listings were Weight Watchers, the Biggest Loser Diet and Jenny Craig. DASH and TLC were the best for healthy eating, while the Mediterranean diet came in third.
