A report from Yale’s Advisory Committee on Campus Climate has found that Sex Week at the school has lost the focus of its stated intention. Yale's president has announced that Sex Week can no longer use Yale's name or facilities.
The report said the event’s initial description was "a campus-wide interdisciplinary sex education program. But according to NBC Connecticut, the week long series, begun at Yale in 2002, has included public services like free STD testing, but also in recent years has featured workshops on masturbation and in giving oral sex.
According to Jezebel, Yale president Richard Levin announced:
"At Dean Mary Miller's suggestion, the current student organizers will have the opportunity to propose a program for next semester that might warrant continuation of this event on campus. We have no intention of suppressing the students' right to free expression. But we will not allow the University's facilities or name to be used in the service of corporate sponsors and the private inurement of student organizers."
Student group Undergraduates for a Better Yale College began a protest against Sex Week earlier this year. They said that about one-third of the events at the 2010 Sex Week were hosted or operated by pornographic film actors or those in the pornography industry.
YaleNews reports that the Advisory Committee recommends that help and resources for students who feel they are victims of sexual misconduct and need advice be described clearly. The committee also wants to establish a University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct.
They also ask Yale leaders to condemn offensive speech when it occurs, while maintaining the school’s commitment to free expression.
