'Irma La Douce" Off Broadway Review: A Whimsical French Affair

The New York City Center Encores! series, previously devoted to reviving vintage American musicals, now gives a smart if rather low-wattage concert staging to “Irma La Douce,” a little French affair that landed on Broadway in 1960 by way of Paris and a hit London production.

Back then a hip, naughty musical about Parisian low-lifes, “Irma La Douce” registers today as a lot more silly than risqué, but the piece retains a certain amount of Gallic charm and boasts several beguiling tunes by Marguerite Monnot.

Warmly rendered by a smoky 10-member band led by Rob Berman, the accordion-laced score features such pretty, familiar tunes as “Valse Milieu” and “Our Language of Love,” which you would recall the second you heard them.
