I must admit to a feeling of relief when I received an email from The Weinstein Co. postponing the NY and LA opening of August: Osage County from Dec. 25 to 27. It’s not that I needed the extra time to write my review…more that I never understood the rationale for opening this incredibly bitter family saga on Christmas Day. It’s about a family get-together alright, but a merry little movie it’s not!
Don’t be misled by the TV previews calling the film version of Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play “the most outrageous comedy of the year.” The only salvageable adjective from that description is “outrageous.” Director John Wells (The Company Men) has assembled a stellar cast that acts its Oscar-worthy socks off, getting plenty of laughs along the way. But even to label it a dramedy is quite a stretch.
