Bon Jovi isn't living on a prayer anymore, now that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has beckoned the hometown boys.

On Sept. 28, the once ‘80s hair band got the first-time nomination that puts them in the running for the esteemed honor.

"I don't think they're absolutely automatic to get into the hall," Billboard editor Craig Marks told nj.com, "but they fill an important niche among the nominees and, by far, they're the one with the largest contemporary following."

Singer Jon Bon Jovi started the group in 1983. With guitarist Richie Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan and drummer Tico Torres, the foursome has poured 30 years of sweat and tears into gritty songwriting and music, reflecting the struggles of a working class upbringing in the Garden State.

The global sensation has sold more than 120 million records worldwide, performed over 2,600 concerts in more than 50 countries, received the Award of Merit at the 2004 American Music Awards, were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006 and had the highest grossing tour of 2008 with ‘Lost Highway.' Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductees, David Bryan won three Tony Awards for his "Memphis" score and the group is currently on the road in support of ‘The Circle World Tour' of 2010.

Other inaugural contenders include Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Donovan and Dr. John. Also on the ballot are the Beastie Boys, Chic, J. Geils Band, LL Cool J, Darlene Love, Laura Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex, Tom Waits and Chuck Willis.

Such mixed musical company is certain to elicit personal favorites. Tell me, how do you feel about Jersey's own getting nominated?

Artists are eligible 25 years after the release of their first record. More than 500 industry voters will choose their top picks, which will be announced in December and New York's Waldorf-Astoria is hosting the festivities on March 14.

Jon Bon Jovi has got to be so excited, Marks told nj.com. "Throughout his career, he's always felt that he's been denied access to that rock elite VIP area. This gets him into the inner circle, regardless of what the critics might say."

My title says it all - Rock and Roll Royalty - They belong in RnR Hall of Fame. Bon Jovi continues to consistently deliver great rock and roll and there is not a better live act! I have driven hours to get to their concert - and I'd do it again in a heart beat. Each member of the band is a talented musician in their own right.....together they are a magnetic musical force to be reckoned with. I have not seen another band that has so deeply touched so many souls. Aside from the many hits the common listener may be familiar with, the albums are laced with so many other wonderful songs that are not as well known. PLEASE do not leave this Earth, people, without buying their albums - you'll be missing out! I have seen both the Beatles live (1965 - Civic Arena, later named the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh) and of course Bon Jovi live several times, and can honestly tell you, that if given a choice, I'd choose Bon Jovi every time. I have never seen a more adoring fan base than Bon Jovi's. If music is to ignite, to excite, to soothe, to move, to enrich and to change lives.....then Bon Jovi has provided.

They are loved through out the world. They are still relevant, and just the longevity of this band makes them more then eligible. They are also one of the best LIVE and entertaining show bands and sell out arenas and stadiums each time they tour. They are also fantastic song writers and do quite a lot for their fans.

I believe Bon Jovi should be in the R&R Hall of Fame, not only do they deserve it, but, they have more than earned it! They are still, to this day, selling out stadiums all over the world, with their current Circle Tour. They have generations of followers. I am in my early 40's and have been to concerts on this tour with my mom in her 60's and my daughter who is 11, and we have had the best time!! Their show is 2 1/2 hours of non stop hits, and they sound and look better than ever! Their music is so well known to everyone, whether they admit it or not, with hits like Livin' On A Prayer (which my 6yr old sings all the words to) Wanted Dead or Alive, Bad Name,It's My Life, Always, Runaway, etc... The list can go on and on!! They have never been a critics band and should not be punished for that! I say Good For Them!! More bands should be true to themselves and their fans, and maybe they wouldn't fade away so quickly!
In my opinion, a lot of the people/bands in the ROCK&ROLL HOF are not really ROCK&ROLL at all!!! Neil Diamond and Donna Summer on a ballot for Rock???? Really people!!!! If they do not get in over who they are against on the ballot, it will be a real shame and a laughable joke in my opinion! Regardless, they are an awesome band loved by millions and still going stronger than ever 27 years after their first album, how many can or will be able to say that in their career??? NOT MANY!!!! GO BON JOVI!!!!!!!

I speak as a South African fan that it is great that they are nominated but the critics have always given them a hard time. They have proved through the fans loyalty and years of good songwriting what they are worth. They have gone from a Sayreville bar band to legends. In the end they are great whether they get in or not. Kiss are still waiting.
