Last week, New Jersey's ''Celebrity Magnet'' Tom Murro, could not —and did not want—to get off the hamster wheel of star-packed events.
From attending Galas with Russell Simmons and “Danny Tanner,” to sneaking a picture of former President Bill Clinton’s dressing room door at "The Daily Show," to receiving gifts from ZZTop’s red bearded guitarist, it is safe to say Murro will be using this week to catch up on his sleep.
All of the glitz, glam and Galas started last Monday with The Fortune Society event at the Tribeca Rooftop in New York City. The foundation honored leading American business entrepreneur Russell Simmons and Capital One Bank. Fortune is a nonprofit social service and advocacy organization that has worked since 1967 to create a world where all incarcerated or formerly incarcerated individuals can become positive, contributing members of society. Their mission is to support successful reentry from prison and promote alternatives to incarceration, thus strengthening the fabric of our communities. They do this through a holistic, one-stop model of service provision to 3,000 men and women every year in the N.Y. area.
Partygoers came to support the cause as well as see elusive Martha Stewart arrive on the red carpet. They did not get to see much as she was not only late, but avoided the carpet.
“The usual Martha diva-like behavior,” added Murro. After spending more bonding time with Simmons, and unfortunately not seeing Stewart, Murro headed to the "Cool Comedy – Hot Cuisine" Gala for the Scleroderma Research Foundation at Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City.
Ashley Olsen came out to support not only the charity, but her dear old TV dad: Bob Saget. She kept true to her Full House character as even though there are realistically two sisters, there was only one Michelle Tanner in attendance that night since Mary-Kate Olsen did not attend.
Saget hosted the evening, because he is an SRF Board Member. His sister sadly passed away from the disease a few years ago. For those of you not familiar with this illness: Scleroderma is an autoimmune, vascular, and connective disease, which currently has no cure.
Others who wanted to show their support included Celebrity Chef Chris Nirschel along with funny men Seth Meyers, Jeff Ross, and Colin Quinn. Together the men teamed up to raise over $600,000 for a very worthy cause. Murro got to contribute to that as well as take quite a “romantical” photograph with Saget while mingling with guests. It seems Danny Tanner learned how to do the “stretch-out one arm” photo shot from his years of raising daughters on TV.
Murro's busy week continued on Tuesday when former President Bill Clinton appeared on "The Daily Show" in NYC. Murro pulled a few strings for a VIP spot at the show, a show that normally has a two year waiting list. Plus, having a former President as a guest doesn’t really help in the ticket availability department. When Murro and his group entered the VIP room, they were given distinct rules of “No picture taking,” and “No speaking to Clinton.” Good thing they didn’t specify and say, “No picture taking of Bill Clinton’s dressing room,” as that is exactly what Murro had done.
“While backstage I was introduced to a guy named Tristan whose parents put the Clinton's up at their house for three years on Martha's Vineyard,” said Murro. “This was while he was in office at the tune of like $50,000 a week. Funny to witness, Tristan actually passed a note to Clinton through the producer during a commercial as we all sat together right near Clinton during the taping, he's still incredibly charismatic.”
In the same night, Murro headed over to Fashion Delivers Charitable Foundation Gala at the New York Museum of History. The donations made by guests such as Murro, Disney’s Jake T. Austin, Tommy Hilfiger, and Hilfiger’s nephew Andy went to provide relief and dignity to men, women, families and survivors of natural disasters. Fashion Delivers has distributed over $55 million in product donations since 2005. Also in attendance was ZZTop’s legendary Guitarist, Billy Gibbons, who gave Murro a pink guitar pic bearing his name as a gift. Murro then asked him how he maintains the famous beard, Gibbons responded, “I just wash it and it follows me everywhere I go”
