Bachelorhood, dating, marriage and divorce are all things that Robert and his friends deal with in their own unique ways in "Company," now being performed at Plays-in-the-Park in Edison, N.J. through Friday, July 3. "Company," the musical composed by Stephen Sondheim and written by George Furth examines Robert's relationships with his friends, five married couples and his three girlfriends.

"Company" is a different type of play that doesn't follow a plot, but instead presents clips or vignettes of Robert's life much like a modern situational comedy. For people who don't mind watching a performance and not getting all the answers this show will leave you wanting more. Those that enjoy being taken away and wrapped up in a story will certainly find something missing.

This is a performance that really makes the audience think about holy matrimony, its meaning and everything surrounding it. The musical and comedic aspects of the show make it both entertaining and funny. The scenes featuring the songs "Getting Married Today" and "Barcelona" are especially enjoyable.

A major theme of the play centers on Robert's friends trying to figure out why he is still single and unmarried on his 35th birthday. Many of the scenes depict his friends questioning his and their own lives and decisions. They wonder if Robert is gay or straight. Has he just not found the right girl or did he let the right one get away?

Amy, the bride to be shows just how stressful getting married can be as she freaks out on her wedding day, nearly walking out on her fiancée while asking Robert if its the right time and right person. Robert's oldest friend Joanne, ponders why it took her until her third marriage to find the right guy and if it will really last. This isn't a play for children, but anyone who is a teenager or older should be able to appreciate many of the topics explored.
