Record producer Bruce Botnick, while reviewing original session tapes of the Doors’ L.A. Woman album for an upcoming re-issue, found a little something extra. Unreleased Doors material featuring Jim Morrison.
The song, titled, “She Smells So Nice,” marks the first Doors release in 40 years. L.A. Woman was the band’s sixth and final studio album with the original members.
Spinner reports that the song is rooted in rhythm and blues. According to Time, Morrison’s vocals sound a bit muffled and abrasive, which may be why the song wasn’t released.
The L.A. Woman rerelease is scheduled on Jan. 24, and includes remastered tracks and eight never heard before versions of Doors classics like “Love Her Madly.” The new recording also contains studio chatter by band members from the record's recording sessions.
According to ontheredcarpet.com, remaining members of the Doors said in a statement, "The studio chatter between the songs is a revelation, transporting listeners to The Doors Workshop: the West Hollywood rehearsal space where they recorded the album with Botnick. One segment in particular captures Morrison suggesting they add the now-iconic thunderstorm sound effects to the beginning of 'Riders On The Storm.'"
The Doors found their initial success with their self-titled album in 1967. Lead singer Morrison died in Paris in 1971 due to a suspected heroin overdose at the age of 27. Contactmusic.com reports that industry sales reports say the Doors have sold 35 million albums in the US and over 100 million around the world.
