Longtime host of “Wheel of Fortune” Pat Sajak said that stories about game shows during their dinner breaks are tales of legend. But Sajak clarified that it had only been about a half dozen times that he had trouble “recognizing the alphabet” when he returned to his show’s tapings.
The 65-year old Sajak, who has hosted “Wheel of Fortune” since 1981, admitted on the "Dan LeBatard is Highly Questionable" program on ESPN 2 that he and letter turner Vanna White had one or two, or maybe six occasional margaritas while hosting the game show, according to People.
Sajak said he and White would visit Los Arcos Mexican restaurant across the street from the Burbank studio, which served "great margaritas." About the show tapings, he said, according to Mail Online, "They’re really good tapes to get a hold of. I have no idea if they were any good. But no one said anything, so I guess I did ok'.”
According to the New York Post, Sajak explained that the show’s format was different in its earlier days, and contestants earned money that was to be exchanged for prizes on the wheel. He explained that due to the turnover of prizes during shows, there was an extended amount of free time between the shows.
Sajak said that he might have been exaggerating his story to make it sound better.
“They always taped five shows in one day, and the stories around shows like ‘Hollywood Squares’ are legendary,” he told ABC News. “You could always tell when you’re watching which shows were taped after the dinner break!”
