Another Hollywood marriage has come to an abrupt end. Actor/comedian Russell Brand filed for divorce from singer Katy Perry on Friday after 14 months of marriage. Brand, 36, cited the all-too-familiar "irreconcilable differences."
He released a statement to the Associated Press, saying, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
Brand and Perry denied rumors of divorce in November, but problems may have come to a head after the couple had a major argument and were separated over Christmas. According to US Magazine, Perry was going to fly to London with Brand for the holidays, but wound up in Hawaii with friends.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Katy Perry and Brand were married in a six-day ceremony at the Aman-e-Khas luxury resort in a tiger reserve in northwestern India's Ranthambhore National Park in October 2010.
At one time in his past Brand had problems with substance abuse and sex addiction, but Perry said he put that behind him. She said, according to Mail Online, “He was addicted to all kinds of things and now he's not. He’s an extremist, which can be both good and bad.”
Perry had just been named MTV artist of the year in December. Brand’s most recent movies were "Arthur," ''Hop" and "Get Him to the Greek."
US Magazine reports that Brand is asking that he and Perry each pay their own attorney fees and that property rights be determined. TMZ says there are “community property assets,” indicating the couple may not have had a prenuptial agreement.
