It's happening at farms everywhere this month — "new faces day," when baby animals are held, displayed, petted, clucked over, fed. This weekend, it will happen at a central Jersey art gallery, when six new members of the cooperative behind the gallery will be featured.
"New Beginnings," the theme for this month's "Second Saturday" artists reception at the Lawrenceville gallery, will introduce work by Mary Bohrer, Carol Critchlow, Judy Hummer, Marge Miller, Libby Ramage and Gerry Sternberg.
In fact, art by the other 23 members of the Lawrenceville Main Street Artists Network will be on view too. Now in its first year of operation, the gallery is in the heart of town, which in turn is located between Princeton and Trenton.
It's doubtful that any of the newbies themselves will be held, displayed, petted or clucked over, but being fed is another matter. Like everyone else who drops in between 4-7, they'll be welcome to have a glass of wine and sample Brooklyn pizza made at TJ's, a neighboring pizzeria.
Many of the residents of Lawrenceville, network artists from the start have focused on boosting other businesses in town, and this Saturday's opening follows that pattern. And, network members' art hangs in a number of area businesses.
Mary Bohrer is a ceramic artist and sculptor, while Carol Critchlow works in graphite, pencil, oil and acrylic. Judy Hummer's a watercolorist, and Marge Miller's mediums are oil, charcoal and graphite. Collagist Libby Ramage also works in charcoal and acrylic; Jerry Sternberg does digital photography.
Their artworks will be on view in the front room of the gallery space.
Seeking additional members who work in 3-D, the Artists Network plans to put out a call for more new faces.
