In the same week that President Obama secured re-election, CIA Director David Patraeus is stepping down from his post, reports CNN.
“After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation,” wrote Patraeus in a letter, according to CNN.
Patraeus is a retired four-star general widely respected for his leadership in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was sworn in as CIA Director on September 6, 2011.
Patraeus married his wife Holly shortly after his graduation from West Point. The couple has two children. Their son Stephen served in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan.
