Former astronaut and New Jersey native Mark Kelly says he’s not interested in running for wife Gabrielle Giffords’ seat in Congress if she is unable to return.
Giffords, recovering from being shot in Arizona back in January, wants to run for re-election next year if she regains her health. In her interview on ABC with Diane Sawyer, Giffords said she would not return unless she was better.
According to CBS News, Kelly, born in Orange and raised in West Orange, said his job is to "make sure she gets better so she can go back to her career."
The Los Angeles Times reported that Giffords spoke in a clear voice, but in phrases: "Pretty good, Difficult, Strong, strong, strong," she replied to questions about how she was feeling and how she’s been doing since the shooting.
Kelly brought video detailing Giffords' recovery. In the early days she had problems simply nodding, or raising two fingers. One time her therapist asked what someone sits in, and Giffords initially responded "Spoon." Kelly said she described some items by using the word "chicken." At one time in the video, Giffords breaks down sobbing with her difficulties and she and her therapist hug.
Florida today.com reported that a thin Giffords called Kelly “brave, brave, brave.” Kelly called his wife “brave and tough.” Giffords then looked right at Kelly and whispered: “Tough, tough, tough.”
On Tuesday, Giffords spoke to her constituents on tape. "I'm getting stronger. I'm getting better," she says, according to the Christian Science Monitor. "I want to get back to work. Representing Arizona is my honor."
Jared Loughner, arrested for Giffords’ shooting in January, pleaded not guilty to 49 charges.
Kelly and Giffords discuss their life after the shooting in their memoir, “Gabby: A Story of Courage and Hope,” available today.
Deadline to disclose intentions of seeking reelection comes in May.
