Newark security guard John Brek arraigned on 3 charges for threats against President Obama

brekjohn_optJohn Brek, 55 of Linden, the Newark Airport security guard arrested for making threats against President Obama, was arraigned before Judge Amilkar Velez-Lopez of the Central Judicial Processing Court Thursday in Essex County on three charges:
  • Third Degree making terroristic threats;
  • Third Degree receiving stolen property;
  • Fourth Degree possession of prohibited devices – hollow point bullets.

He remains in Essex County Jail in lieu of $220,000 bail. Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow has requested that the court order a psychiatric evaluation Brek. The order is pending.

According to the complaint, on Tuesday evening, at about 5:40 p.m., while he was working in a security function outside Continental Cargo Building 157 at Newark Liberty Airport, Brek allegedly stated to another airport employee that he cut a hole in the fence to be able to shoot the President, that he was just a short distance away, and simulated holding a rifle in the direction of where the President would be.

Following his arrest police searched his Linden home where they discovered that the suspect was in possession of a stolen rifle and hollow point bullets in addition to a number of other legally possessed weapons.

The United States Secret Service, the Port Authority Police and the Essex County Prosecutor's Office are handling the investigation jointly. Dow said the investigation is continuing.

"We understand that Federal charges have not been currently issued but have not been ruled out,'' Dow said.
