Franklin Lakes resident and NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson is thinking about becoming a Democratic candidate for Congress in New Jersey’s 5th district.

Carson said he hasn't made his decision to run yet, but has been in talks with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Running for Congress began to appeal more to Carson after Congressional districts were redrawn last week, and Republican incumbent Congressman Scott Garrett ended up with no Democratic opponent. AOL Patch reported that after the redistricting, Democratic Rep. Steve Rothman chose to leave instead of running against Garrett.

Garrett, from Sussex County, is looked at as one of Congress’ most conservative members. According to a report on Giants 101, Passaic County Freeholder Terry Duffy, Assemblywoman Connie Wagner and Sen. Bob Gordon are also thinking of running against Garrett.

Carson spent his entire career as a linebacker with the New York Giants from 1976 to 1988. Since he retired, Carson has been in sports broadcasting and began a company for sports consulting and promotion. He has sufficient funding to support his own campaign.

Giants offensive lineman turned car dealer Brad Benson, who played with Carson from 1978 to 1988, called Carson a "very caring, very cerebral" man, according to NorthJersey.com. Last week, Carson traveled to North Carolina for his brother, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and said he had to take care of his personal matters before making a decision on running.
