Two women believed to be in a relationship were shot at Violet Andrews Park in Portland, Tex. over the past weekend.
Authorities say the two were shot in the head late Friday night or early Saturday morning. The couple was found about 25 yards beneath an overlook deck at the park.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported that Mollie Judith Olgin, 19, was dead, according to Police Chief Randy Wright. Mary Christine Chapa, 18, underwent emergency surgery at a local hospital and remains in serious condition, according to CNN.
A nearby resident told police they heard two loud bangs just before midnight Friday, but thought they were from firecrackers, according to Wright. He said investigators believe that around that time the women walked with their assailant down into knee-deep grass, and were shot with a large caliber handgun.
Witnesses told police they saw a dark-colored vehicle leaving the scene, according to myfox8.com. Police did not know whether the victims’ sexual orientation was a part of the shooting, but Wright said the case is being investigated as a murder.
