See 'Spiderman' on Broadway for free if your name is Tony...or some variation

After being dissed by the Tony Committee, “Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark” producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris have found another way to get more Tonys.

“Spider-Man, which features high-flying stunts and music by U2’s Bono and The Edge, only received two Tony nominations, for best costume design and best scenic design. The producers decided to get the last word by giving away free tickets to the Sunday, June 10 matinee – the day of the Tony Awards show - to anyone with the first name of Tony, Anthony, Antoinette, Toni or Antonio.

Wednesday afternoon they explained in a press release, “the Tonys have been honoring Broadway for years, and we thought it was about time to repay the favor.”

Anyone eligible to receive free tickets is invited to come to the Foxwoods Theater box office beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 4, where they will give the first 100 attendees a coupon for a pair of tickets to the 3 p.m., June 10 performance.

The cheeky producers can afford to be generous because the show is bulletproof, with or without Tony nominations. “Box office is great!” a publicist wrote us. “Last week we grossed about $1,300.000.”

She also sent another release adding a name to the list. “We’d like to assure all Antonia’s out there that they too are valid Tonys in the eyes of ‘Spider-Man.’” If your name is another variation on the name Tony, make sure to tell the producers. After all, they said that “nothing would make us prouder than to have more Tonys than any other show on Broadway on June 10."
