The Drama Desk Awards: In the press room with the winners

James Corden, who won for best actor in the play, beating out Philip Seyour Hoffman (“Death of a Salesman”) told us “it’s ridiculous really to be on a list with such incredible people, so I’m absolutely thrilled. It’s lovely,” he said, to be recognized by the critics. “I’m from a small town outside London, so to be recognized in such a way is almost too much for me to tbennettTracie060412_optake in.”

Our favorite actor on the awards circuit is Tracie Bennett, who won a Drama Desk Award for best actress in a play for her portrayal of Judy Garland in her later life. Probably no one is having more fun this awards season than the bubbly, English actress, who looked terrific in a Rubin Singer lime, tulle strapless gown and silvery platform heels that hurt her so much her publicist said she wanted to sit during the interview. She’s now performed as Judy Garland for a year and half, after a run in the London’s West End, three months on tour and then over a month at the Guthrie before heading to Broadway. Does she ever find it hard to leave her character?

“No, not at all,” she said. “It is when you’re rehearsing, when you’re a bit obsessed, you know, with your homework. But you have to learn to take that wig off and get on with it otherwise you’d go schizophrenic wouldn’t you?” she said. “You’d go a bit mad. I’ve seen people do it. But when the wig comes off straight back to Tracie.” And then the down-to-earth actress, who looked like she was having a ball, moved on to her next interview.

The Tonys are June 10 at the Beacon Theater on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
