WHERE THEY NEED HELP: Defensive line, wide receiver, quarterback, offensive line
ANALYSIS: This team needs help stopping the run and rushing the passer. The Bengals only had 27 sacks last year. They need another pass rusher opposite last year’s second round pick Carlos Dunlop who had 9.5 sacks. If they believe Carson Palmer is serious about retiring if he is not traded, they will need to draft a quarterback for the future and could select Gabbert. Finally, they need a big play wide receiver as neither Terrell Owens or Chad Ochicinco is likely to return next season.
WHAT THEY SHOULD DO: Address the defensive line picking defensive tackle Nick Fairley of Auburn or defensive end Robert Quinn of North Carolina. Call Palmer’s bluff, and if he does retire, then sign a veteran free agent and draft a quarterback in a year with better prospects instead of addressing it this year. The Bengals have drafted wide receivers high in the last two drafts. A.J. Green is the complete package, and the best receiver in the draft, and a sure thing, drawing comparisons to Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions. Even if he is better than who they currently have on the roster, the Bengals have other more pressing needs. Draft Fairly, and fix the defensive line now. Address the offensive line and wide receiver position in the later rounds.
WHERE THEY ARE EXPECTED TO USE THE FIRST PICK: The Bengals will play it safe and take A.J. Green, wide receiver, Georgia.
