THE GAME: Rutgers (11-11, 2-8) will be preparing to win three consecutive Big East regular season games for the first time since 2003-04 when it travels to Louisville (14-8, 5-4) for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off at 18,865-seat Freedom Hall on Saturday (Feb. 6). The Cardinals, who have been ranked as high as No. 16 this season, will be looking to win back-to-back league games for the first time since early January after starting out a perfect 3-0 in the Conference.
RUTGERS NOTES: Rutgers is coming off an 84-72 home win over rival St. John's on Tuesday evening after a 74-73 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday. Mike Rosario shot 13-of-22 to score a career-high 33 points and Hamady Ndiaye (Dakar, Senegal) posted 19 points, nine blocks, nine rebounds and six dunks to lead Rutgers over the Red Storm in convincing fashion. The Scarlet Knights shot 56.4 percent (31-55) and out-rebounded the St. John's by a 38-28 margin. Rosario scored 21 points in the first half and was 3-of-5 from behind the arc in 39 minutes of action. His scoring output marked the most for an Rutgers player since Quincy Douby posted 36 in an 82-70 win at St. John's on March 5, 2006. Ndiaye shot 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free throw line, while logging 38 minutes for a second consecutive contest. His nine rejections marked the most for an Rutgers player in a Big East contest.
Rosario was named to the Big East Conference Honor Roll this past Monday. Ndiaye leads the Big East and is third nationally in blocks with an average of 4.91 rejections-per-game. As of Feb. 3, he had accumulated more blocks this season than 10 teams in the Conference.
LOUISVILLE NOTES: Louisville defeated Connecticut, 82-69, at home on Big Monday. Edgar Sosa scored 15 points and handed out eight assists, while Jerry Smith added 14 points and Samardo Samuels chipped in 13. Louisville never trailed and built a 19-point lead early in the second half before holding off a couple of mild runs by the Huskies. Samuels leads the Cardinals in scoring with his 15.7 points-per-game average, including a 15.1 mark in league play. Senior forward Reginald Delk has had the hot hand for UofL recently, shooting 68.2 percent in the past three games.
THE SERIES: Saturday afternoon's contest marks the ninth meeting between the schools dating back to 1975, with the Cardinals holding a 7-1 advantage in victories. The Scarlet Knights are 1-3 in Big East regular season play versus UofL and 0-3 at Freedom Hall. Last season, then No. 9/12-ranked Louisville captured a 78-59 victory at the RAC.
