BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
NEW YORK — After his worst beating in the Big East Tournament in 25 years, Jim Calhoun sat on the podium faced a mass of assembled media members and made his declaration towards his future. It's just that he did not really say anything.
Calhoun did not commit to coming back, nor did he say he would be leaving. After a litany of reports saying he was a goner and then saying he would be back according to people inside the program and his son, respectively, the coach said that he has not discussed the issue with those who guessed on his future.
What Calhoun did say is that he has received a contract offer for next year and beyond, his current one ends after this season, but has not signed it.
Of course, preceding that press conference, there was a basketball game. Although who could really blame Calhoun for not wanting to talk about that.
His Huskies were dismantled by St. John's 73-51 in the first round of the tournament at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm (17-14) was led by Sean Evans with 19 points and 10 rebounds, a season high. They limited Connecticut (17-15) to just 37.5 percent shooting and into turning the ball over 19 times.
"[They] quite frankly handed us our butts," said Calhoun.
The loss ended any hopes, if any, the Huskies still had at the NCAA tournament. With a 7-11 conference record and a quick ouster in the first round, one of last year's Final Four teams will not be dancing this season.
Nor would that would mean a trip to the NITs either. Calhoun was non-committal on that matter as well, saying he would need to meet with the school's Athletic Director first to confer.
