SKIING AND SNOWBOARDING

Sure, all the big guns in downhill skiing think nothing of zooming down the slopes at Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy, or at Sun Valley out West, or at Whiteface Mountain here at Lake Placid. To them, skiing is a mere bag of shells.

But have you ever wondered where the experts learned to ski or snowboard? The answer is as clear as the ski goggles covering your face: they probably began at a much smaller local ski area.

New Jersey and Pennsylvania offer several nearby mountain resorts that are magnificent for the entire family. Each also provides instruction for all levels as well as full snowsport packages. And, of course, little ones can simply enjoy building a snowfort or snowfamily with their own families. And they all have lodges for relaxing, enjoying winter beverages and conviviality. Several are located in or nearby towns for shopping and dining at local restaurants.

Following is a listing of local ski and snowboard areas. Instead of traveling five hours to Vermont or New Hampshire, why not make a family day-trip out of the sport?

If you really want good skiing in the Poconos, try Jack Frost/Big Boulder resorts. Two mountains for the price of one. You can buy your ticket at JF for day skiing, leave at 4pm to get an early dinner, and drive over to Big Boulder for night time skiing. These mountains have the best snowmaking equipment in the Poconos, and are a little further in than Camelback and Shawnee but not as far as Elk. http://jfbb.com Don't want to ski? They also have all-day tubing.

What beautiful children. They must look like their mother. How come no mention that their mother is a medalist in cross country skiing in Maine?? Yes, the kids had the fondest of memories on their first weekend of skiing. They mostly enjoyed watching their grandmother "roll" down the hill on her backside after imbibing in one too many wines in the lodge.
