Picking the Preakness: NJNR's Tom the Bomb has his say after nailing the Derby cold

The 137th running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday will be run on a perfect weather day at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., according to the forecasters, but will it produce a perfect ending for Kentucky Derby champion I'll Have Another?

Can he join the long list of horses who have recently won the first two legs of the Triple Crown only to see their dreams go up in smoke over the grueling mile-and-a-half marathon known as the Test of the Champion, the Belmont Stakes?

Only time will tell as 10 combatants will load into the starting gate Saturday aiming at the bull's-eye that rests squarely on I'll Have Another's back.

Wednesday's post position draw was inconclusive as all the would-be contenders drew well in the middle of the field with Derby runner-up Bodemeister getting a perfect draw at No. 7. He was also installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite with I'll Have Another, who will leave from post 9, being pegged as the 2-1 second choice.

Others who return from the Derby field, and who must be considered serious contenders, are Went The Day Well (post 5), Creative Cause (post 6) and Daddy Nose Best (post 8).

Who do I think will win?

Well, unlike the Derby, when I not only picked the $32 winner but the $306 exacta as well, this race is not nearly as wide open and competitive. It looks as if the fresh faces who did not run two weeks ago at Churchill Downs are in a bit over their heads.

But, can Creative Cause (6-1), Went The Day Well (6-1) or Daddy Nose Best (15-1) spring an upset?

You can find out what I think by going to my web site www.tomthebombpicks.com and click on the My Selections page to purchase my picks.

Whatever you decide, good luck! Enjoy Round Two. It should be another exciting race.
