Rutgers basketball’s Dane Miller, Jonathan Mitchell honored by Big East

mitchell021510_optRutgers freshman wing Dane Miller was named the Rookie of the Week for a second straight week and junior forward Jonathan Mitchell was recognized on the Honor Roll by the Big East Conference on Monday after helping the Scarlet Knights to a 2-0 record and a 71-68 victory over No. 7/8-ranked Georgetown. Miller averaged 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists for the week, while Mitchell averaged 19.0 points and 7.0 rebounds shooting 54.2 (13-24) percent from the field and 53.3 percent (8-15) from behind the arc.

Miller is averaging 12.5 points-per-game in league contests to leads all Big East rookies in scoring in conference games. He had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Hoyas, shooting 5-of-9 with four assists and two blocks. Miller had an offensive rebound and tip-in with 22 seconds remaining to provide Rutgers a 67-66 lead it never relinquished. He also hit a pair of clutch free throws with 10 seconds on the clock. Miller had 10 points, three steals and four rebounds in 70-62 win over Caldwell on Tuesday.

Mitchell shot nine-of-12 en route a career-high 24 points in the win over Georgetown. He made his first seven shots, including his initial four from behind the arc. He also deposited a pair of clutch free throws with four seconds remaining to ensure the victory. Versus Caldwell, Mitchell had 14 points and seven rebounds.

Miller has excelled in Big East play and has pounded the offensive glass especially well in league contests, averaging 3.00 offensive rebounds-per-game, which ranks seventh among all players and second among rookies. Among freshman in league games, Miller ranks first in scoring, first in steals (1.50), tied for second in rebounding (6.3), third in assists (2.83), and fourth in blocks (0.75).

Mitchell leads Rutgers in scoring in conference games with a 15.0 average. He is shooting 47.8 percent (32-67) from behind the arc and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free throw line in Big East games.

Rutgers players have been recognized in the Big East weekly honors seven times this season. Mike Rosario was named to the Honor Roll on Feb. 1 and Hamady Ndiaye earned back-to-back Honor Roll accolades on Dec. 21 and Dec. 14.
