According to a source close to the program, Rutgers coach Fred Hill and Athletic Director Tim Pernetti met Wednesday extensively in a meeting that ultimately resulted with Hill being retained.
After the story was first reported by NewJerseyNewsroom.com, the school issued a press release to the general media.
"Fred Hill is under contract as our men's basketball head coach," Pernetti said in the statement. "We had a productive meeting and look forward to working together to build the program."
Hill was under fire after amassing a 47-77 record in four years as head coach of the program and his job security became in peril after an 0-8 start to the Big East schedule this year. With roughly $1.5 million remaining on his next contract for the next three seasons, Hill may have been a beneficiary of tough economic times as much as anything else.
A conference call with Hill has been set for 3 p.m.
This news broke only hours after The Star-Ledger reported that Seton Hall has decided to fire their head coach Bobby Gonzalez on the heels of an embarassing 87-69 loss to Texas Tech last night in the first round of the NIT. A press conference was set for 2 p.m. to discuss the future of the program with Athletic Director Joe Quinlan and Pat Hobbs.
