BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
NEW YORK — In between the games, the Big East announced some awards today at Madison Square Garden.
Syracuse's Wesley Johnson won the Player of the Year, edging out Villanova's Scottie Reynolds and West Virginia's Da'Sean Butler. Johnson averaged a team best 15.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. He did so after transferring in from Iowa State and sitting out last season due to NCAA regulations.
Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson won the Rookie of the Year award, nudging out Rutgers' Dane Miller. He averaged 12.0 points per game, best of any freshman.
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim won the Coach of the Year prize, after leading the Orange to a 28-3 record and 15-3 in conference. They did so despite lowered preseason expectations.
"This is a result of we were picked sixth because nobody believed me and that I said Wesley Johnson was pretty good," said Boeheim on his award.
