What to take away from Rutgers’ victory at Army

1. Rutgers is in football purgatory. They're good enough to dominate an Army, hang around with Pittsburgh and look better than the dregs of the Big East. They fit in nicely in the middle of the conference right now. But that's not cutting it compared to what was uttered in the preseason. Greg Schiano says that his team is a work in progress, implying that the best is yet to come. But is there enough to work this team up into the top three of the Big East. That is still unknown.

2. This victory was more impressive than you think. Army isn't as bad you might think. Coming into Friday night they had the 17th best defense in the nation. The triple option is always a threat, and QB Trent Steelman is just a freshman but a good one in that system. If his receivers could have made some plays, the game would have been closer. In the end Army hurt itself, but there is much evident improvement for Stan Brock's squad.

3. Tom Savage's first road game went well, with an asterisk. Michie Stadium was maybe 40% full (maybe) so he didn't have to deal with the usual road worries. Nonetheless, Savage did what he has done well up to this point. He didn't make the big turnover, didn't hurt his team, and fit well into the gameplan. At this point the freshman won't hurt you and he might even win a game or two for you. Can't ask for much more.
4. It was already probably the case but that two-headed running attack is looking mighty one sided. Once again Joe Martinek earned the large majority of the carries. Schiano has said that he'll play the hot hand but Jourdan Brooks hasn't had much of a chance to heat up. He had just one carry for nine yards in the first three quarters. At this point De'Antwan Williams might have a better chance at that second spot on the depth chart.
5. Anthony Davis needs a better watch. The junior left tackle didn't get the start because he showed up late to a team function. Desmond Stapleton started for him, playing right tackle as Kevin Haslam moved over to left tackle. Not sure what happened there but this has been quixotic year for the preseason honoree. First he came into camp overweight and was demoted to the second team, now this. Not a good impression for a player who some was saying might go pro after this season. Supposed character issues don't usually woo over the scouts. Or your head coach.
