A powerful arctic air mass has invaded the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan area with cold temperatures, windy conditions, and even the threat for scattered snow showers!
Arctic high pressure over the Great Lakes and an intensifying low pressure system over the Atlantic are producing a strong pressure gradient over the region, leading to sustained winds of 10 to 20 mph with higher gusts up to 40 mph. The pressure gradient is drawing arctic cold air towards the coast, which also happens to be moving over the Great Lakes, which will lead to the development of widely scattered snow showers and keep high temperatures in the mid 20's to lower 30's. Wind chills will range from the single digits to the upper 10's through this evening.
The pressure gradient will weaken tonight through tomorrow as the Arctic high pressure moves towards the East coast. Tranquil conditions will return by tomorrow with temperatures ranging in the single digits to mid 10's for lows and mid 20's to mid 30's for highs. As the high pressure system shifts off the coast Thursday through Saturday, temperatures will moderate from the upper 20's to mid 30's for lows and upper 30s to upper 40's for highs.
A cold front will move through the region on Saturday evening with a few scattered showers. Temperatures will fall back into the mid 20's to lower 30's for lows by Sunday morning. An area of low pressure will approach by Sunday with rain and snow showers along the coast and snow showers over the interior. Temperatures on Sunday and Monday will range from the mid 30's to lower 40's for highs and lower 20's to lower 30's for lows.
