If you're thinking about planting a garden this spring, consider "going green" with an organic garden.
New Jersey Conservation Foundation will present a workshop on organic gardening from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 25, at the Bamboo Brook Outdoor Education Center, 170 Longview Road in Chester Township.
Organic farmer Mark Canright of Comeback Farm in Asbury and Michelle Glenn of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Jersey (NOFA-NJ) in Hillsborough will discuss the benefits of organic agriculture and offer practical advice to home gardeners.
Canright, who sells produce at the Dvoor Farm Market in Flemington and to area businesses, will share tips on growing specialty greens and heirloom tomatoes. He will provide organic seeds and potting soil so that participants can start their own seedlings indoors in advance of the outdoor gardening season.
"In terms of starting tomatoes, this is perfect timing," said Canright. "They take about six weeks until they're ready to go in the ground in May."
Glenn will talk about organic approaches to pest and disease control, including what to use, when to use it, and who to ask about garden problems.
The fee for the program is $5 for New Jersey Conservation Foundation members and $10 for non-members. For registration and information, contact Carol Banhart at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 908-234-1225.
