Salem nuclear power plant shut down due to river icing

SalemNPP010410_optThe Salem Unit 2 nuclear power plant (in Salem County, N.J.) was manually shut down by plant operators at about 8 a.m. on January 3 due to icing on the Delaware River. The icing also led to power being reduced to 80 percent at Salem Unit 1. Both plants draw water from the river for (non-radioactive) cooling purposes.

According to Neil Sheehan, the NRC Public Affairs Officer, Region I, said, "Our Resident Inspectors reported to the site and observed actions taken by operators to place the plant in a safe shutdown condition.

"They will continue to follow activities at the site today geared toward determining when Unit 2 can be restarted and when Unit 1 can return to full power.''
