When you begin to research the history of Kentucky Derby winners one thing becomes abundantly clear – if you have a contender who was bred in the state of Kentucky you have a big shot.

The last nine winners of the Run for the Roses were horses who were bred in “The Bluegrass State” and over 100 Kentucky-breds have won the race during its 139-year history. Only one winner – Funny Cide in 2003 – was bred in New York and the last California-bred to hit the winner’s circle was Decidely in 1962.
