Assemblyman Mainor apologizes for calling Philadelphia Eagles 'gaybirds'

Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles don’t need Assemblyman Charles Mainor (D-Hudson) -- or his friend -- to call their team a nasty name, let alone one that could be considered homophobic.

Eagles’ fans can do all the name calling that needs to be done themselves, thank you Assemblyman.

Mainor apologized Monday for calling the Eagles “those Gaybirds from Philly.” on his Facebook wall Sunday during the New York Giants-Green Bay Packers playoff game and said a friend wrote most of it.

The message declared "We are not going to just lay down, we come to play. Who the hell do you think we are the DALLAS COWGIRLS OR THOSE GAYBIRDS FROM PHILLY...NO WE ARE THE NEW YORK GIANTS.”

Mainor watched the game at a party in his hometown of Jersey City. He said a friend sat at the computer and added the comment about the “gaybirds from Philly.”

“I have to take full responsibility because it was under my name,” Mainor told The Jersey Journal. “I have no excuse, other than me not looking before he did send the post.”

Mainor added that he hopes his constituents do not take the comment to mean he isn’t supportive of gay rights.

“I have very, very close relatives who are gay,” he said. “I have nothing against them. I’m far from that."

"Looking glass self"?? Perhaps a homophobe?? chuckie it is apparent you see in others what you in fact have inside you. chuckie as a politician without common sense you need to realize you represent "gay" people and even swine like yourself. Perhaps give a second read before you post. Grow up chuckie.

Seriously? With all that is going on in New Jersey this is what makes the news? Anyone that is a football fan has indulged in '"trash talk" that is half of what football is about. As far as facebook - the comments made by Assemblyman Mainor's friend was made on his PERSONAL page! Maybe we need to start adding a disclaimer now for the thoughts of those that we network with on Facebook. I really cannot believe that this was taken so literally. I guess when you are intimidated by the GOOD in someone you have to try to find something negative - sorry Mr Assemblyman that you are acquainted with a Giants fan that also happens to be a "trash talker"! I love to meet a Giants fan that is not! Anyway, keep pushing the State of NJ in a positive direction. I support you for all that you do politically!
