Gov. Chris Christie and Democratic and Republican legislators are settling a final version of the $29.3 billion 2010-11 state budget that restores funding for students, the disabled, cultural sites and maintain the independence of the State Commission of investigation, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported Monday.
The newspaper reported that according to officials, who spoke on the conditions of anonymity, the budget still includes $820 million in state school aid.
The revised budget will include more funding for welfare, adult medical day care, home-care services and education services for the blind. There is additional funding for NJ STARS scholarships to county colleges, the NJ After 3 childcare program, and tuition assistance grants. There is funding for cultural sites, including the Camden-based Battleship New Jersey and the Newark Museum. There is also more funding for projects in the state's Urban Enterprise Zones.
The budget would also keep in place Bergen County's "Blue Laws'' that prohibit Sunday shopping and provide funding to keep Hagedorn State Psychiatric Hospital in northern Hunterdon County operating. The Star-Ledger reported that all funding restorations are matched with new cuts or revenue sources but details were not immediately available.
The Democratic-controlled Legislature and Republican Christie must agree on the budget by June 30.
