Gov. Jon Corzine's re-election campaign is responding to The Press of Atlantic City's endorsement of Republican challenger Chris Christie for governor with a 60-second ad that that attempts to remind the gambling mecca's business people and residents of what the governor believes he has done for them.
"Chris Christie earned his reputation as an effective and energetic corruption-buster,'' The Press declared Sunday. "We believe he would be an effective governor as well – one who would bring some fiscal sanity to state government, one who would set a no-nonsense tone in Trenton, and one who would protect and nurture Atlantic City's economic health in these precarious times.''
The radio ad, which can be heard as of Tuesday on the city's radio stations, responds that Corzine has invested in attracting new jobs, built new infrastructure, and improved the affordability of higher education in Atlantic City.
It also recounts what the Democrat's campaign maintains are Corzine accomplishments for the city:- $15 billion of investments committed for the next decade – between new towers, expansions, and the new resort-casinos in the works from MGM; Revel; the Barr/Bashaw group with their Gateway Casino; Margaritaville; and the new one slated for the Pinnacle site.
- New direct train service from New York and Newark to Atlantic City, through a major financial contribution from state Casino Redevelopment Authority, as well as Harrah's, Resorts and Borgata.
- Widening projects have been initiated on both the Atlantic City Expressway and Garden State Parkway to facilitate southbound traffic and access to the city.
- The state Economic Development Authority has finalized $30.3 million in financing assistance, business incentives and tax credits in Atlantic City. The assistance is expected to leverage $154 million in total public and private investment and lead to the creation of an estimated 537 new jobs.
- Atlantic City International Airport Expansion, including an $18 million terminal addition, a $10 million apron expansion, a hotel and conference center, and freight and cargo enhancements to draw tourists and freight to the city.
- An additional 1,049 children and 959 adults added to FamilyCare rolls in Atlantic City. Presently, 7,487 children and 2,741 adults are enrolled in the city.
- Increase in education funding for Atlantic City by more than $4.9 million.
- Installation of largest single-roof solar array in the nation on the city's Convention Center.
- Returning of Boardwalk Hall and the Convention Center to local control.
- Plans to develop Bader Field and create good jobs in Atlantic City.
