Crossroads Heritage Area seeks public input

revolution061609_optThree meetings will be held Wednesday (6/17) and Thursday (6/18) to obtain public input on how New Jersey's Crossroads of the American Revolution Heritage Area should be developed over the next five years.

The sessions are set for 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday in the first floor public meeting room at the state Department of Environmental Protection, 401 East State Street in Trenton. The remaining meetings will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Burlington Meeting House, 340 High Street in Burlington and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum at the Haggerty Education Center, 53 Hanover Avenue in Whippany.

Cate Litvack, Crossroads director, said the meetings will help lay the groundwork for the Heritage Area's future initiatives, including preservation, interpretation, education, recreation and community revitalization based on New Jersey's Revolutionary War heritage.

The state's Revolutionary War heritage was recognized by Congress in 2006 when it designated the Crossroads of the American Revolution in New Jersey as a National Heritage Area, one of 49 in the country. The Heritage Area includes 213 cities and towns within 14 counties. It stretches from Fort Lee on the heights of the Palisades in Bergen County to Red Bank Battlefield on the bank of the Delaware River in Gloucester County.

Congress also designated the non-profit Crossroads of the American Revolution Association as the organization to work with environmental and historical groups, businesses and individuals, local and state governments to preserve and promote New Jersey's role in the founding of the nation.

Litvack said the meetings will be hosted by Peter Benton and Elizabeth Watson of Heritage Strategies and Jim Klein of Lardner/Klein Landscape Architects. The three has extensive experience in the management and planning of heritage areas, including the Shenandoah Valley, Delaware and Lehigh and the Journey Through Hallowed Ground.
