EAST ORANGE — Essex County Prosecutor Paula T. Dow and East Orange Chief of Police Ronald Borgo Tuesday announced the arrest of an East Orange man in connection with Monday's fatal shooting of a 19-year-old boy.

Ralph Sanders, 29, was arrested by East Orange Police minutes after the shooting that claimed the life of Devohn Warren, of East Orange, in front of 332 Halsted Ave early Monday morning. Detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad and East Orange Police Department developed information linking Sanders to the crime. Sanders has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is being held in the Essex County Jail in lieu of $1 million bail. He is expected to be arraigned before Essex County Superior Court Judge Peter J. Vazquez Wednesday.

According to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Romesh Sukhdeo, at approximately 12:53 Monday morning, East Orange Police responded to the gunshot detection system and calls of shots fired in front of 332 Halsted Avenue. Upon arrival, police discovered the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at University Hospital a short time later. Detectives believe the shooting resulted from an earlier dispute. Through the gunshot detection system, East Orange Police were able to swarm the shooting scene within minutes. Sanders was spotted only blocks away fleeing from the area. After obtaining a search warrant, detectives recovered two handguns at the defendant's East Orange home.

Prosecutor Dow and Chief Borgo commended Det. Jose Ramirez, Lt. Steven Roberts, Det. Thomas Chung and Det. Robert Harris of the Essex County Prosecutor's Homicide Squad and Crime Scene Unit, along with Det. Rudy Correia, Lt. Thomas Koundry, Sgt. Hosia Reynolds, Sgt. Carl Kyer, Det. Greg Jackson, Det. Angela Concepcion, and Det. DaShawn Lawson of the East Orange Police Department for the investigation.
