Atlantic City International Airport was shut down for nearly two hours on Thursday due to an emergency landing of an Air National Guard fighter.
The aircraft, a 177th Fighter Wing F-16 Fighting Falcon of the New Jersey Air National Guard, suffered a major electrical problem and was forced to make an emergency landing at A.C. International. The fighter made an uneventful landing and rolled to a stop at the intersection of the two runways, effectively rendering both useless.
A handful of flights were required to divert to nearby airports. Spirit Airlines Flight 235 made a stop at New York's LaGuardia International Airport and Spirit Flight 936 made a stop over at Philadelphia International.
A spokesmen from Spirit Airlines told the Press of Atlantic City that both flights will make their way back to Atlantic City International as soon as safely possible.
Air National Guard officials, following procedure, did not move the downed F-16 off the runway until the source of the electrical problem was discovered. The fighter was finally cleared shortly after 1 p.m. and the airport was reopened to arriving and departing flights.
The 177th Fighter Wing is based out of Atlantic City International Airport. The pilot of the F-16 was not reported to be injured during the emergency landing.
