Medical examiners are studying the remains of a right foot found inside a sneaker at the Jersey shore on Tuesday.
The discovery of a size 5½ sneaker containing the foot was made by a fisherman at Corson’s Inlet State Park in Ocean City.
CBS New York reported that the sneaker was an Adidas ADI Rise 2 high-top. The severed foot remains are being examined and tested for DNA by the New Jersey State Anthropologist. The foot was likely to be that of a female because there was evidence of colored toenail polish on it, but the gender and age had not been confirmed Wednesday.
According to firstcoastnews.com, about a dozen severed feet have washed up along the coast of British Columbia and Washington state in the last seven years.
Forensics experts say that a body that is decomposing may separate at the ankle due to its weakness.
The discovery of the remains shocked local fishermen. Ben Lyman from Flemington told NBC 10 Philadelphia, "This is a long waterway. It could come from here, maybe it could come from somewhere else."
The Ocean City Gazette reported that anyone who may have information on the case is being asked to call the New Jersey State Police Major Crime Unit at 609-561-1800, ext. 3355.
