Clifton resident allegedly assaulted ex-girlfriend and was involved in serious automobile accident
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli announced Wednesday that 54 year old Gregory Burd of Clifton, N.J., has been charged with Eluding, Aggravated Assault while Eluding, Domestic Violence Simple Assault, and numerous motor vehicle violations in connection with a serious motor vehicle accident that occurred on Wednesday, December 22, 2010, in Closter.
According to the investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, in conjunction with the Demarest and Closter Police Departments, at approximately 8:20 a.m., the Demarest police responded to a 9-1-1 call that initially reported the vice principal at the Demarest Middle School being assaulted by a parent.
A description of the fleeing suspect vehicle was broadcast via radio and a marked Demarest police unit spotted the vehicle. Upon activating his lights and siren to affect a motor vehicle stop, the suspect driver (later identified as Gregory Burd) attempted to flee. The marked unit was quickly joined in the pursuit by a second Demarest police vehicle. The pursuit, which lasted only several minutes and less than two miles, ended at the intersection of Schrallenberg Road and Durie Avenue, Closter, N.J., when Burd ran a red light and struck a vehicle being driven by a 55-year-old Emerson woman. Burd was quickly arrested at the scene. Officers immediately detected alcohol on the breath of Burd. Both Burd and the driver of the second vehicle were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
The investigation quickly revealed that the altercation at the middle school involved Burd's ex-girlfriend, not the vice principal, and was actually a domestic violence. Burd lay in wait in the school parking lot, and when his ex-girlfriend arrived for her position as a secretary in the school, he began to assault her. The vice principal and several other teachers quickly intervened, and Burd fled. The assault victim was not seriously injured.
Bail was set by Judge Brian Bernstein at $85,000, with no ten percent option. He is currently under guard in the custody of the Bergen County
Sheriff's Department at Hackensack University Medical Center. Burd is scheduled for first appearance on January 4, 2011, in Demarest Municipal Court.
