On Tuesday, Hunterdon County Freeholder Director William Mennen of Tewksbury told Republican Part committee members in Somerset, Middlesex and Hunterdon counties that he intends to seek the 16th District Assembly seat left vacant by the death of Assemblyman Peter Biondi of Hillsborough.

The Somerset County GOP Committee recently appointed Somerset Freeholder Jack Ciattarelli to fill the seat but an appointment must be filled again when the Assembly reorganizes in January.

“I am writing to you today, to ask for your consideration when this vacancy occurs,” Mennen wrote. “I am a proven conservative with proven accomplishments. I am ready to work with Governor Chris Christie, Senator Kip Bateman and Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli to cut taxes, reduce the size of government and put our economy back on track."

Mennen, an attorney, wrote that he will support Republican efforts to pass what they call Fair School Funding legislation as well as efforts to bolster the state’s economy and cut taxes.

“Like Jack was, I am an elected county freeholder,” Mennen wrote. “I believe being a county freeholder — a member of a county legislature — is a good place to get the experience at balancing budgets and making government work more efficiently for us, the taxpayers.”
