News, notes and events from around New Jersey
Two of Newark's longstanding community leaders were honored Wednesday at the NJ Institute of Social Justice 10th anniversary gala celebration and awards dinner: Dr. Robert Curvin, distinguished fellow at Rutgers University and David Kerr, founder and president of Integrity House.
The pair was honored in front of 320 gala attendees at the June 10 event, which raised $235,000 for the Newark-based non-profit.
Dr. Curvin, born and raised in Newark, was a community activist in the late 1960s, working to restore calm after the 1967 disturbances and became a forceful witness for the city's minority population before the Lilley Commission.
Curvin was also a key organizer in fashioning the coalition that successfully campaigned for the election of Kenneth Gibson, the first African American mayor of Newark.David Kerr, a New Jersey State Parole Officer in the 1960s, founded Integrity House in 1968 as a response Newark’s growing heroin epidemic. For two years, Kerr lived in the city with addicts struggling through recovery.
In 1981, Kerr authored the first national definition of the Therapeutic Community treatment modality, and today Integrity House, with locations in Newark and Secaucus, stands as a national and international prototype for drug addiction recovery.
Fellow honorees included Al Koeppe, president and CEO of Newark Alliance and the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey.
Business, legal and non-profit leaders from across the state attended the gala including Nina Mitchell Wells, NJ secretary of state; John Farmer Jr., incoming dean of the Rutgers School of Law; John Lowenstein, professor of physics for NYU; Dennis Bone, president of Verizon-NJ; William Marino, president and CEO of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ; Dr. Norman Samuels, provost emeritus of Rutgers-Newark; Mildred Crump, president of Municipal Council, City of Newark; Art Ryan, Retired Chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial; Anthony Coscia, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; and Donald Karp, former chairman of the New Jersey Historical Society and former chairman and CEO of Broad National Bank.
The Newark-based NJ Institute for Social Justice’s mission is to address the underlying social and economic inequities facing urban residents of New Jersey. From fighting unscrupulous predatory lending practices to promoting economic opportunity, supporting prisoner reentry, defending civil rights, and influencing justice reform, The Institute and its partners work together to develop solutions to the real world, everyday problems facing Newark/Essex County residents as well as urban New Jerseyans throughout the state.

Jon Stewart supporter mounts campaign to put TV star in Mercer County Hall of Fame
Elise Brown of Hamilton, New Jersey, writes:
I was astonished to learn during a visit to the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton that Lawrenceville native and award-winning Daily Show host Jon Stewart is not among those depicted in the "Mercer County Hall of Fame" - a dedicated photo gallery located in the arena (but Judith Light and Albert Einstein are.)
As a resident of Mercer County and a fan of Stewart's, I have created a Facebook group called "Put Jon Stewart in the Mercer County, NJ Hall of Fame" to correct this oversight. Can you please help by joining the cause, and/or alerting others to it?
Jonathan "Jon" Stewart (born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz on November 28, 1962) is an American political satirist, writer, television host, actor and stand-up comedian. He is best known as the host of The Daily Show, a satirical news program airing on Comedy Central.

Clara Maass Medical Center offers elective angioplasty
Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville is now offering elective angioplasty to patients through participation in an important nationwide research study.
The research study, called the Atlantic C-PORT-E Study of elective angioplasty, is undertaken in partnership with Johns Hopkins and Duke University Clinical Research Center. The goal is to determine the success rate of angioplasty performed at hospitals without a cardiac surgery unit.
Clara Maass Medical Center was one of only 12 New Jersey hospitals selected to participate in this 2-year research study for its high level of experience and outstanding cardiac services.
Angioplasty is a procedure in which a small balloon is inserted to open a blocked artery and restore blood flow to the heart. A heart attack can occur if that blood flow becomes completely blocked.
Now, patients can elect to participate in the Atlantic C-Port-E study and may have this procedure performed at Clara Maass Medical Center on an elective basis, where they will remain in the constant care of their trusted physician, and stay close to home. This will ensure continuity of care and maximize patient and family comfort
